Introduction to Painting with Cold Wax

Saturday, August 28, 2021, 10 - 4, $225
Location: Portland, Oregon

After working with encaustic (hot wax) for many years I started working with cold wax and found it to be very versatile. Traditionally cold wax, which is a soft paste of beeswax with a little solvent, is mixed with oil paint and applied to a panel with a variety of tools. It can be used for other purposes too including as a sealing coat for paintings created in oil or acrylic. (Yes, it's compatible with acrylic!)

It has a fascinating look all its own, and layering properties that are somewhat similar to encaustic. You can build up layers and scrape them back to reveal what's underneath, and you can even include collage and drawing transfers in these paintings.

As the name implies, you don't heat it but there is some significant drying time after you're done painting. There are a couple of simple ways to speed up the drying process and I'll go over a couple of them in class. We'll also work on both panel and paper so you get a feel for both options.

All supplies will be provided. Most students will leave class with 1-2 finished projects.

Confirmation, directions to my studio and additional information will be emailed to each student upon registration. Space is limited to 5 students so classes fill quickly.
