I am fully vaccinated! Class will be held in my private studio in NE Portland and will be held following CDC COVID-19 protocols. To keep everyone safer, everyone who enters my studio must show proof of vaccination, and cannot participate in classes until two weeks after their final shot.
Following the recently updated mandates, masks will be required inside and 2 artists will share a 6 foot table and one hotplate just like we used to. There may be up to 5 students in each class. I look forward to welcoming you back into my studio!

Encaustic Workshops
Encaustic is the art of painting with molten beeswax mixed with colored pigments and resin. The results are like no other mediummysterious, deep, and translucent, with a glow that seems to emanate from within.
I've taught live workshops throughout the U.S. and Canada, and am the author of the Embracing Encaustic book series. Now I'm offering my workshops online through unique creative communities and private or group mentoring.

Introduction to Painting with Cold Wax
Saturday, August 28, 2021 (2 spots left)
All levels welcome
Traditionally cold wax, which is a soft paste of beeswax with a little solvent, is mixed with oil paint and applied to a panel with a variety of tools. It has a fascinating look all its own, and layering properties that are somewhat similar to encaustic. You can build up layers and scrape them back to reveal what's underneath, and you can even include collage and drawing transfers in these paintings.
I'll have lots of materials available for you to experiment with. Join me to expand your ideas on how to use wax in your paintings! Learn more and register here

Taming Skies NEW!
Saturday, September 25, 2021
Intermediate level class
A dramatic sunset or turbulent storm will always catch my attention, but I also enjoy the more subtle skies and clouds as I go through my day. In this workshop I'll share two of my favorite methods for painting skies, and and how I often combine encaustic paint with pigment sticks to create these special spaces.
Feel free to bring images for inspiration, but realism isn't our goal. We'll try to capture the feeling of the place. Or you can skip bringing any images and make it up as you go along!

Photo Encaustic Community: Your Magical Lens - Online
Next sessions start Oct. 2, 2021
Online/Zoom, Intermediate Level
In this adventurous online community, we'll combine encaustic and mixed media with your personal photographs. We'll concentrate on the techniques I find most useful, including hand coloring before and after waxing, and reworking parts of your photographs as collage elements with additions of texture and translucency.
If you're feeling like you can't seem to move forward on your own, there's a reason for that. You need dedicated time to explore your art. During Your Magical Lens, you'll be setting aside time each week to do just that.
