Wax Week: Finding Focus

Sun-Thurs, October 13-17, 2019, 10 - 4 pm, $850 (SOLD OUT)
Advanced Level Class
Location: Portland, Oregon

This new 5-day Wax Week class is for experienced encaustic painters who want to work on a personal series or better prepare for showing and selling work. This class is perfect for artists who are already on the path to finding their voice but need some direction and encouragement from their peers. This is a rare opportunity to work with a group of like-minded artists who will help you leap ahead in presenting your vision to the world.

This differs from my other Wax Week workshops in two important ways. Of course I will be available to help you with any technical challenges, but this class won't be focused on technique. This is for encaustic painters who are relatively confident in their technical abilities and are excited to find more direction in their subject or message. If you are comfortable painting on your own and are inspired to hear gentle but honest reviews of your work then you are in the right place.

During our time together you'll get a clearer vision of how to work on multiples -- paintings that have a common thread. This can help you clarify your intentions for figuring out your next steps or help in preparing you to show your work. We'll discuss topics including:
  • The value of working in a series
  • What to consider when working larger
  • Setting up a successful studio practice
  • Choosing galleries/shows that further your goals
  • How to photograph your work
  • Different approaches to pricing
  • Professionally finishing and framing your work
This will be a semi-curated group of artists, selected to work well together as a group. You'll have plenty of work time and should be excited to participate in discussions, idea generation, and problem solving. We'll all work together to make a plan for the week, with short-term and long-term goals, and will have daily critiques/discussions as we move together through the week. This experience will give you a road map for how to continue a successful studio practice long after this class is over. I hope you'll join us!
