Wax Week: Extreme Collage

July 13 - 17, Sat - Wed, 10 - 4 pm, $850* (SOLD OUT)
Location: Portland, Oregon

Most people think of a collage as having a flat surface, but you can do so much more -- especially with wax! Some of the more memorable things I have helped people incorporate into their paintings include half of a chicken egg, a flock of plastic birds, and an impressive variety of rusty metal gears.

So what do you have in mind? Join me to drill, fill, pour, wrap, tie, bind, burn, scrunch, and punch our way into something that speaks to you in new ways.

From the dark and mysterious to the not so serious, we will take your encaustic collage in brave new directions during this intensive 5-day workshop in my private Portland Oregon studio. I'll also answer questions throughout the class on finishing, framing, signing and shipping your work.

Here's what we'll cover:
  • Story Boxes (7/13) - Everyone has a story to tell! These little boxes are perfect to create a home for your mementos of a special trip or one that you have yet to enjoy, as well as special people or pets in your life. We'll use a variety of encaustic techniques to fill your boxes with personal photographs, natural materials, found objects and more.

  • Beyond the Panel (7/14) - For this we'll break out of the box with more three dimensional flair, attaching paper, fiber, fabric and objects in unusual ways and letting them cascade beyond the traditional square or rectangle.

  • Rip and Stitch (7/15) - Get ready for a whole different approach to encaustic collage where you can deconstruct and reimagine how to bind your collage elements. This approach allows more flexibility for treating your paintings like fabric, cutting out shapes and reattaching them with stitching, brads, or many other creative materials.

  • Book Smart (7/16) - Let's face it, books are still sexy! Create an accordion book that can be stored folded, stand on its own or be hung on a wall. These are perfect for incorporating your favorite photos, drawings, poems or anecdotes and will bring your memories to life.
I keep my class sizes very small so everyone can work at their own pace within a community of supportive artists. All of my Wax Week workshops are easily accessible for someone with little or no experience working with encaustic, but I'll also challenge more experienced artists by offering rich, personalized instruction.

Most supplies will be provided including encaustic medium, encaustic paint, brushes, paper, small boards, and basic encaustic tools. You will be asked to bring at least 2 supports of your choice no larger than about 11 x 14 and a few interesting collage materials to add to our shared stash. After registration you'll receive detailed information as well as suggestions for optional items to bring.

These 5-day classes give you time to get into the rhythm of creating every day and taking your art in new directions or deepening what you've already started. Space is limited to 6 students and classes tend to fill very quickly.
